TUI Cruises and Meyer Turku have agreed to build Mein Schiff 7 with delivery in 2023, which is based on the design of New Mein Schiff 1 and 2.
Meyer Turku said the agreement is still subject to financing, which is now being worked on with the banks and Finnvera.
“We are very thankful that TUI Cruises is entrusting us with building another ship to their fleet of modern and beautiful Mein Schiffs. It will bring further good work to Turku shipyard as well as the Finnish maritime cluster. This is what we are preparing for with our recruitments and investments,” commented Meyer Turku chief executive Jan Meyer.
Meyer Turku deputy chief executive Tapani Pulli told PST in an interview last year about how energy efficiency and sustainable solutions were important aspects in the Mein Schiff series, as each successive ship was set an improvement target over its predecessor, which Meyer Turku met. The latest cruise ship in this class, Mein Schiff 6, was delivered in June and, as a result of that policy, its energy consumption “was exceptionally low”, noted Mr Pulli.
He singled out one of the reasons behind the environmentally friendliness of the vessel: the ship uses the most advanced scrubber technology and the same scrubber solutions are being retrofitted to the previous sister vessels. “Together with the system supplier and our customer, we improved the technology by finding the best possible configuration of the equipment,” explained Mr Pulli.
